Attaching a load to a Uhing traverse drive

Share |

Uhing traverse drives are friction drives.

The rolling ring bearings are under pressure and in direct contact with the surface of the drive shaft.

If you attach a load, then you are increasing this pressure on the bearings and as a result, the bearings start to wear down. That means your Uhing traverse drive starts to lose thrust and soon it will start to slip.

Many people think that by scaling up to a larger Uhing traverse they can get around this problem.

Using a larger drive does not help. If a load is being attached improperly then the Uhing drive will lose thrust and will slip whether you use a small Uhing drive or a large one.

Significant weight and overturning moments of force must be neutralized.

Amacoil does this by using a linear bearing slide load carrier.

In the picture, the load is attached to the flat platform on top. The platform rides on the two Thompson rails.

The traverse "floats" beneath the load carrier. The yokes are not attached to the traverse.

The two yokes shown extend down on either side of the traverse unit. There is no attachment between the traverse and the yokes.

The traverse “floats” beneath the load.

The only work the Uhing traverse does is push against the yokes to move the load back and forth.

The Uhing traverse is designed only to provide side thrust.

If your machine designer has the Uhing traverse doing any other work, then you will see the Uhing traverse slip sooner or later.
