Aston, PA, November 2004 - As a design alternative to screw-based linear drive systems, Uhing Company has introduced the Model RS4 drive nut for machine designers who require smooth backlash-free linear motion. Specially machined rolling ring bearings inside the drive assure constant single-point contact between the bearings and the drive shaft. The result is zero play when the shaft is rotated - even during reversal. Anti-backlash solutions such as preloaded nuts, shims or double enveloping gears are not required.
The smooth shaft in an RS4 assembly provides built-in overload protection because the shaft simply slips if the system is overloaded instead of churning and grinding. Because there are no threads, d irt and debris cannot become trapped. The system will not clog or jam nor is it necessary to design in a protective bellows assembly. A free movement lever option lets users slide the drive anywhere along the shaft without having to turn on the motor. This reduces wear and tear on the system and facilitates positioning the drive head.
As components in a variety of positioning and reciprocating linear motion systems, Uhing drives are used to perform a number of operations in material handling machines, winding equipment, test and measurement devices, parts transfer systems, packaging machines and other production, converting and finishing equipment.
Available in seven sizes to meet varying payloads and linear speed requirements, the RS4 drive nut is configurable for vertical or horizontal travel. Shaft rotational speeds may be up to 10,000 rpm depending on the size of the drive. Linear travel speed ranges from 0.5 ft/sec up to 4.0 ft/sec depending on the size of the drive and on the weight of the payload. RS4 drives offer axial thrust from 22 lbs to 449 lbs. For maintenance, Uhing rolling ring drives require only periodic light lubrication of the shaft.
When integrated with a linear scale, proximity switches or other stroke measuring or limiting devices, Uhing RS4 linear drives provide smooth movement with accuracy subject to the types of controls being used.
