The Model RG rolling ring drive assembly is uniquely suited for wire and cable winding and for spooling a variety of other materials from hair-thin fiber to heavy gauge rope and chain.
The linear speed (pitch) of the traverse guide and the travel direction are both mechanically controlled – independently of the drive motor. This eliminates the need for electronics and programming to save money and simplify set-up and operation.
A Uhing RG traverse winding assembly does not require a separate drive motor. Instead, the Uhing shaft is linked via a simple pulley system to the take-up spool shaft.
Once the linear pitch is set on the Uhing RG traverse drive, it remains automatically synchronized with the rotating spool, even if the take-up motor speeds up or slows down. There is never a need to change gears or reverse the motor.
Linear pitch is adjustable using the pitch dial on the Uhing drive.

A Uhing RG rolling ring traverse set up eliminates the need for additional controls and electronics.

A typical screw-based winding system requires costly extras such as controllers and servomotors.

Special winding assembly
Smooth, even winding onto a tapered flange spool - without programming
For winding materials onto spools with biconical flanges that angle or taper inward or outward, this assembly utilizes purely mechanical means to control travel direction and stroke length, thus eliminating the need for clutches, gears, programming and complex controls.
Because the changes to stroke length and reversal are made while the system is in operation - independently of the drive motor's speed and rotational direction - an affordable unidirectional, single speed motor may be used to drive the system and production continues with fewer interruptions.
Based on the diameter of the material being spooled, the desired incremental increase in the traverse stroke length is pre-set using a dial-in control on the front of the assembly. As the system operates, a ratchet lever attached to the framework is actuated as the linear drive passes by, causing the end stops to automatically move apart - while the system continues to operate - in increments relative to the dialed-in value. The end stops trigger the spring-actuated reversal mechanism on the rolling ring drive so, as the distance between the end stops increases, the traversing nut's stroke length changes accordingly, thereby winding the material out onto the tapered flange surfaces.
How it works
The end stop assemblies (C) are mounted on two shafts called guide rails (D). The front most shaft is fitted with the end stop ratchet lever (E). A cam (G), affixed to the rolling ring drive (A), is positioned so the ratchet lever is actuated each time the drive passes by. When the lever is actuated, the front shaft rotates relative to an adjustable value, which is preset using the control knob (F). As the shaft turns, it bears against the bearings (H) mounted on the end stop assemblies. The bearings are pressed against the smooth shaft and function like a screw to move the end stop assemblies apart. As the end stops - which trigger the reversal mechanism (B) -- move apart, the required increase in stroke length is achieved. When the spool is filled, the assembly is easily reset by hand.
More "rolling ring" benefits
In production environments, the threads on the shaft of a screw-based winding system can become clogged and cause the system to jam. When a screw jams, the system churns and grinds, which can damage or destroy valuable equipment. To avoid this, a protective bellows assembly is often needed which adds cost and limits space. The shaft in a Uhing rolling ring system is smooth, and unthreaded. Dirt and debris, therefore, don't get caught in threads. There is usually no need to design and construct a bellows assembly.
Depending on the make and model, rolling ring linear actuators can provide up to 800 lbs. of axial thrust. Click here for additional specifications. |
